First of all, my condolences and prayers go out to the Atkins family. I have the utmost respect for his cause. His theories have really shaken things up, as they well needed to be. Kudos for challenging the "norm".

What do you think of when someone says they are "on Atkins"? Do you relate the Atkins Diet to cutting out simple sugars and refined carbs or simply no carbs? How about the concept of insulin and fat storage? Everyone now knows someone that is or has been "on Atkins". Unfortunately, very few people that are on the Atkins Diet are really on the Atkins Diet! Atkins is not about "no carbohydrates and all the fat and protein you can eat". It is obvious to me that not too many made it past the first few chapters. While I am not advocating a full blown Atkins Diet, neither am I by any means advocating the "theories" of the FDA or USDA and the current food pyramid. I would like to offer my two cents on the positives and negatives of the Atkins diet.

I am biased towards many of the core principles of the Atkins approach. I also feel that Atkins misses the mark. Despite my disagreements, I would describe my own diet as a psuedo-Atkins style. I endorse neither a NO CARB nor a HIGH FAT diet. The answer, I believe, is somewhere in the middle.
