Why Medicine Ball Training?
by Rick Wood, BS, CSCS

Why? Because there is more to strength than pumping iron! Medicine ball training connects the upper body to the powerful lower body. That torso connection is also known as the core! Core training is incredibly popular. The problem is that core training is not only about holding a “plank” for 60 seconds! Medicine ball training is very different! Unlike weight training or holding a bunch of different positions, medicine balls facilitate explosive movements in every direction! If you want to be powerful, you must train powerfully!

Medicine ball training is crucial to developing upper body power. Imagine if your feet never left the ground in lower body training. No shuffling, running, jumping… just squats and leg presses. Totally incomplete training!!! Medicine ball training is like the running and jumping of the upper body and torso. Just like the feet have to lose contact with the ground to train powerfully, your hands have to lose contact with dumbbells, barbells, etc to train powerfully. Medicine balls obviously work better than throwing dumbbells!
Medicine balls help greatly in becoming more injury resistant. Medicine ball training will strengthen your weak links and make you more functionally fit! Just because you have all this great muscle doesn’t mean you can use it outside the gym! We need to use more planes of movement with more proprioception (or sensory balance) in our training. Weak elbow and shoulder joints can be trained in a safer way. For sure, abs and lower back fall into this category.
Do any of your weight room exercises look like a dynamic golf swing or an explosive tennis serve? That’s what I’m talking about! Don’t train everything slowly in the gym and expect to swing explosively. Taking it further, don’t expect that your yoga poses will give you any strength or power out of all that flexibility you’re gaining! No matter what your goals, your training should result in a more bouncy, lively, functionally fit way of life! Now let’s go throw some balls around!
