Here's a little secret for you... Diets don’t work! If you go “on” a diet, you eventually have to go “off” the diet. Success means you must change your eating strategies and engage in the appropriate active lifestyle. Anything else is a pipe dream! Diets inevitably lead to a deprivation mindset. Diets are restrictive! A diet says, “Can’t have…”!!!

Another problem is that diets, weight and scales go together. Hopefully everyone understands that it’s even harder to keep off the weight than the weight loss itself. Every obese acquaintance I have has lost weight on whatever the diet of month is. In my experience, 100% of these people that focus on restrictive diets, focus on their weight and focus on the scale are currently more obese than when I met them. A little naïve discipline can always drop those numbers on the scale! The problem is that diets don’t work in the big picture! Is this still a secret?
“I lost five pounds last week” or the classic, magical gimmick numbers are “Lose 30 pounds in 30 days”!!! The exercise and eating guru, Covert Bailey, put it into context with something like this… “Hey Marge, they have 2 pounds on sale for $3.00!” Of course the following question is, 2 pounds of what? OK, so you lost 30 pounds… 30 pounds of what? On the average low calorie diet, around 25% of the weight loss will be muscle. This will cost that particular “loser” around 7-8 pounds of muscle. With muscle burning around 35 calories per pound every day, (some say as high as 50 per day) that’s burning 245 less calories per day or 7,350 less per month!!! Remember 3500 calories per pound of fat! Now, after losing 7 pounds of muscle, it takes seven thousand calories less per month to maintain your current weight! If you don’t stay on your diet, you will gain 2 pounds of fat per month because you “got healthy” and lost 30 pounds in 30 days! Please, don’t diet!!!

Dieting is a temporary tactic to treat a symptom! Isn’t that typical? Let’s fix the problem, not treat the symptom! Dieting just doesn’t work with my fundamentals of success. I contend that you have to focus on eating the good stuff and feed your metabolism with lots of small & healthy mini meals. If it doesn’t include protein, fruits and vegetables scrap it! It’s a fad and cabbage soup is not a lifestyle! Focus on getting in the good stuff! Once you add in what’s right, the wrong stuff tends to disappear in the wash.
