Women & Toning

"I don't want to get big! I just want to tone!" Can I get a copyright on this phrase? If I had a nickel for every woman that has used those exact words!!! OK, let's get to it! I only use the term "toning" to open the door to my female clientele. Toning is a politically correct term that has no scientific basis at all. The fear of bulging muscles and popping veins is a concern. I do understand. This fear though, is one of the main stumbling blocks for women in their attempts at weight control. The lack of weight training actually hinders your ability to be "toned".

Accidentally Muscular?
If you don't want to look like a football player, don't squat 500 pounds. Don't want to look like the magazine bodybuilder? Don't take steriods and dedicate your life to the gym! Don't want to be 250 pounds of solid muscle? Then you don't eat 100 egg whites and five chickens per day! Macho masculine muscularity doesn't even go over well with the men! If you have the genetic predisposition to be big and muscular, you would be already! Approximately one out of every 2,500 women have the genetic ability to get buff accidentally. Funny that 9 out of 10 of my new female clients initially thinks that she is the one, even though she is weak and lacks muscle tone when starting the program! You have absolutely nothing to fear with your 2 or 3 hours per week pumping those vinyl and chrome dumbbells! I promise.

Definition of "Definition"

If we are going to improve your "muscle tone", we will have to change our jargon. It's all about about the muscle, not about the tone. You can't tone what you don't have and fat does not tighten or tone up. When you lift weights, the desired biological end result is an increase in lean muscle mass. This in no way means you have to get bigger! So you say you want to tone up? Does this mean you want to be smaller? Do you want to be more fit and still look feminine? Weight training can achieve all those things! However, let's change your goals to "stronger", "leaner", and "more defined". "Smaller" or "skinnier" doesn't look or feel better! If we can approach your lifting with this mindset, we can overcome your fears and stumbling blocks and really workout! Let's pump some iron and build some muscle. It's the muscle that shapes your curves!
